The Performing Arts Archive of the Academy of Arts, Berlin, is Germany's most important cross-genre art archive. Parallel to the Academy's member sections, the archive is also divided into six archive departments: Fine Arts, Architecture, Music, Literature, Performing Arts, and Film and Media Art. These are complemented by the Historical Archive, the Art Collection, and the Library, as well as the Media Department, the Restoration Department, the Registrars, a User Department, and the Memorial Sites. Documents relating to dance can be found in all archive departments. The Performing Arts Archive Department focuses on preserving the estates and bequests of influential dancers and choreographers. Here, the focus is primarily on expressive dance of the 1920s and 1930s, with the estates of Mary Wigman, Gret Palucca, and Valeska Gert; classical dance in its post-World War II form, with the estates of Tatjana Gsovsky and Maya Plisetskaya; the holdings of Tom Schilling with the dance theater of the Komische Oper; and the Deutsches Tanztheater with the estate of Gerhard Bohner and the pre-estates of Johann Kresnik, Susanne Linke, and Arila Siegert. The archive of the Berliner Tanzfabrik is another focal point. The holdings contain written documents such as concepts and correspondence, as well as some choreographic sketches, photos, audio recordings, and video materials.
